Why is April all about restaurants?

The Seattle Weekly has published its “Favorite Restaurants” list, and two Wallingford eateries, Joule and Kisaku, made the cut. Joule and Kisaku were also lauded in Seattle Magazine’s recent Best Restaurants issue, plus they’re participating in Seattle Restaurant Week (April 18-29).

We wondered why all these “best restaurants” lists and events were happening so close together and thought The Seattle Times’ food and restaurant writer Nancy Leson might have the answer.

“April is a notoriously slow month for restaurants and always has been,” she said, and suspected that a significant reason is taxes. “People are paying their taxes, and they don’t know if they’re getting money back,” she said. “Best” lists are big ad-sales drivers, and restaurants need publicity during April, so this is the best month to run them.

Leson also told us that “the new Restaurant Week — with over 100 restaurants participating — is in April because that’s when the chefs/owners said they needed help most.”
