Before February is over, the controversial fence designed to help prevent suicides on the Aurora Bridge will be complete. Now, everyone is waiting to see if it will really make a difference. With the help of the nonprofit Common Language Project and communications students at the University of Washington, we take a closer look at why this issue is so personal for so many. What a waste! They will find somewhere to do it. This dosnt address the problems at all!
I'm just dying to see this fence!
It looks like the bars can be bent very easily. Is this just going to be a mild inconvenience to those wanting to jump, or a vandals opportunity to cause some damage that will have a lasting affect on the appearance of the fence.
re: what a waste, it is incorrect to say people will find somewhere else to do it. See:

It won't stop people like Ian Mclennon Shipp. He needs something like this to help him. He is so pitiful
People’s lives will be saved. It’s been proven, most suicides by “jumping” are “spur-of-the-moment” attempts. That fence will take that “temptation” away. All that truly matters is that it will be there. Too little too late, BUT, better late than never.
In loving memory of my Brother & Friend of 6 years, Victor Allen Mitchell, November 5th, 2004 and my son for 19 years, Axel, February 21, 2008.
Boys, I love you both, miss you terribly, and not a day goes by when I do not think of you in some way, shape or form. I believe that when He finally calls me home, we will meet again. You definately now have one heckuva headstone.
and lots of tax dollars to fix/replace.
30+ years of research says otherwise, Ballardite. These barriers have been going up on suicide bridges worldwide, and have substantially reduced suicides on them. It removes the temptation for the impulsive jumper. Seattle is l;ate to the game, actually, in having one installed.
I drove on the bridge over the weekend, and most of the panels are in place. The view is still fine when you are whizzing by at 45, and they do give a “cozier” feel to the bridge. I am very glad this project was done. Lives and money WILL be saved.
They should actually leave a gap in one place to corral the jumpers to where they'll make less of a mess.
i too have had multiple friends fall to their death off of this bridge. i beleive these fences need to have barbed wire on them, that would reall make the jumper rethink his or her strategy. most people dont like getting hurt so why hurt your self before jumping to a somewhat painless death? these fences are not enough.
