On the morning of April 29, Seattle Police Traffic Unit officers conducted pedestrian crosswalk enforcement patrols at N. 41st and Stone Way North. The SPD Blotter reports that officers issued 40 “Right of Way Pedestrian” tickets, one ticket for failure to wear a bicycle helmet, two No Proof of Insurance tickets and one Expired Tabs ticket. Officers received numerous comments of appreciation and thanks from people in the neighborhood.

Bone up on pedestrian-related laws here.

Anyone want to guess how many tickets would be issued at the N. 45th and Burke crosswalk on a typical day? We’d wager the triple digits.

  1. Meaning that pedestrians, by way of being such, and attempting to cross a street, are in some way interfering with traffic?

  2. Okay, I'm assuming that the likelihood is that tickets were given to drivers not stopping for peds, but that really isn't 100% clear to me from the article. A bicycle helmet ticket? Whatever! How about ticketing them for changing from drivers to pedestrians whenever it suits their needs.

  3. Joekolero, I agree that part’s unclear. As for the biking comment, it’s legal to do that. As long as they’re yielding to peds, I don’t see the problem.

  4. There's a very arrogant attitude about j-walking in this city. Aside from it being just plain dangerous (I know that sounds like a joke, but ask the many who have been hit in crosswalks about that), it's also unbelievably rude and selfish. I've seen many a line of cars unable to turn at a light, simply because folks thought they could cross whenever they liked. I love the glare, most of all, as you try to edge out to take that turn, only to have a law-breaking pedestrian admonish your rudeness! Gotta love it.

How about you read and learn the law? There is nothing illegal about changing from one mode to another while using a bicycle.

  6. J2l3 I think you may be misunderstanding, the frustration in my experience is not from a dismounted cyclist walking across a sidewalk, rather from when bicycle riders stay mounted, yet expect to have the rights and privileges of both motor vehicles and pedestrians at the same time. Not sure on the legality, but I can assure you that it burns many drivers to watch.

  7. its completely legal to ride your bike on the sidewalk….find something else to cry about lil fella.

  8. Just because it is legal, does not make it good etiquette, but, big daddy, you go right no ahead and keep enraging people who are driving a vehicle that weighs 3,000 lbs more than yours does, and see how that turns out for ya, k guy?
