Update: Spoiler alert! If you haven’t yet watched the premiere, you might want to wait!

This week was the premiere of Bravo’s Top Chef, a cooking competition show, and Wallingford’s very own Colin Patterson from Sutra made it onto the first episode.

Unfortunately, Patterson didn’t make it past the first round of the competition. The first challenge had the Wallingford chef cooking a pig, something he said he hasn’t done in ten years (Sutra is a vegetarian restaurant). Seattle was well represented in the premiere, with four of 29 “cheftestants” hailing from the Emerald City. But, the first three didn’t last long. Patterson, Tavolata’s Simon Pantet and The Coterie Room’s Nina Vicente were sent home after the first challenge. Now, only Ashley Villaluz from Metiza Catering remains in the running to become one of 16 cheftestants to compete in the show.

  1. Spoiler alert! He didn't get kicked off because of the pig – it was because he spilled soup on the plate. I thought that was a little extreme but I think that is the tone they were going for on this show.

  2. He couldn't butcher the meat. Tom sent the other guy home for not being able to properly do it…  Top Chef is not going to change competition rules for vegetarian chefs or kosher chefs or anything of the like. This is a cooking competition that uses meat in almost every challenge. How could you not know that? Season freaking 9. If I was a vegetarian chef and got accepted to compete I just might try breaking down a few whole pigs, sides of cow, rabbits and cooking them for friends. Of course 1 day of humiliated publicity is always great too.
