Warm weather: waterway, cooking, walking, sales

With temperatures forecast for the 70s the next few days, it’s an ideal time to get out. A few activities to consider:

Plan your summer paddling excursions at Waterway 18 (at 2199 N. Northlake Way; park across the street), which was recently restored by the Seattle Parks Foundation, which worked with Friends of Waterway 18 and other partners to complete the project.. Mark your calendar for the June 21 celebration at the public space.

Friday night is the monthly Wallingford Community Kitchen, held at the Senior Center in the Good Shepherd Center. This month’s focus will be spring soups and quick breads, which neighbors will cook and eat together, then take away leftovers. Perfect for a weekend picnic!

In the past, participants could choose between bringing fresh ingredients from a list or paying $10 toward ingredients. For this Community Kitchen, organizer Rachel Duboff has begun a new registration and prepayment system that will streamline the event. The Community Kitchen is growing — last month’s hosted 45 people — and Duboff says that she needed to take some uncertainty out of the evening (some people would commit to bringing an ingredient but not show up, e.g.). Be sure to buy tickets for tomorrow’s Community Kitchen at Brown Paper Tickets.

There’s almost too much to choose from on Saturday morning:

  • From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., John Stanford International School hosts eight yard sales around Wallingford. Plan your route and get out early for the best selection. All proceeds benefit the school.
  • Wallingford Walks resumes; the theme for 2010’s inaugural walk is Birds and Bees. Meet at 10 a.m. at the Tully’s on N. 45th and Meridian, then take a couple of hours to stroll to neighbors who keep chickens, ducks and bees. Walk leader is Wallingford Community Council president and chicken enthusiast Mary Heim. Beekeeper and neighborhood blogger Jordan Schwartz will share his hives and honey.
  • Also from 10 a.m. to noon, Fire Station No. 9 (which serves Wallingford) will host an open house where residents will get to preview the station renovation that will begin next year. Our sister site Fremont Universe has much more information.

If you don’t mind traveling a little further afield, the University District StreetFair is going Saturday and Sunday on The Ave. More than 50,000 people kick off festival season at the fair, which features arts and crafts, community information, music, and food.
