Farmers Market expanding to Wallingford Ave.

Last week we told you about a proposal to move the Wallingford Farmers Market to Wallingford Avenue. We got word today that a new deal has been struck between the Wallingford Chamber of Commerce, the Seattle Farmers Market Association, the Office of Economic Development and the Seattle Department of Transportation. Starting as soon as next Wednesday, September 1, the market will expand to the east half of Wallingford Ave. between N. 44th and N. 45th Streets for its last month of operation.

SDOT found that most of the traffic on Wallingford Ave. turns south from 45th, which is one reason they’ll only close the northbound lane, Chamber of Commerce president Kara Ceriello said. The main reason, though, was to keep the west side of the street open for businesses. “They’ll still have parking, deliveries, everything they normally have,” said Ceriello. The Chamber and the Farmers Market Association will rent the appropriate fencing to make it safe.

“The Chamber has gotten the city to listen,” Ceriello said, referring to her frustration in getting approval to expand the market onto Wallingford Ave. “We’re going to do this so it doesn’t adversely affect the businesses on Wallingford Avenue.”

The Chamber will host a community meeting for residents, businesses that may be affected along Wallingford Ave. (and Interlake Ave. N., a possible future market location), and other neighborhood groups next Tuesday, August 31. Here are the details:

WHO: Wallingford Chamber, Community Council, Neighborhood Office, Sustainable Wallingford and Wallingford residents
WHAT: Community Meeting, open to all residents, business owners and any who attend Farmers Markets
WHEN: Tuesday, August 31 7 pm presentation and Q & A – doors open at 6 pm
WHERE: Wallingford Community & Senior Center, inside Good Shepherd Center at 50th and Sunnyside
WHY: To address all concerns and answer questions

The Chamber thanks the Wallingford Senior Center for use of its space.

Ceriello liked the idea of the market expanding on September 1, so it’ll coincide with the First Wednesday Art Walk. “It’ll be like a mini street festival,” she said.
