Meridian Market space to get new grocery store

Uncategorized

Since the demise of Meridian Market (2201 N. 56th St.), Tangletown residents have missed having a local grocery stop to pick up wine, milk or a fresh loaf of bread. Soon a new store will open in its place: 56th Street Market.

The owners of the new market, which bills itself as “Your friendly neighborhood food mart,” have applied for a beer and wine license, but we haven’t been able to get much more information. A tipster who works nearby said they’ve heard the store will open in a month or two.

What would you like to see available in the 56th Street Market?

  1. One of the things I liked about the old place is that they offered fresh produce. If I was short of onions or tomatoes, I preferred to run in there rather than try drive and find parking at a big store.

  2. They need to focus on why someone would pick them over qfc. I hope they focus on affordable, locally produced, high quality basics. Qfc is price gouging in their upstairs area, and pcc is pretty far away. Meridian market overreached by adding the deli and not focusing on the groceries.

  3. We (neighbors around 50th and 1st) made a list for the 50th St Market, and hopefully they will look at it one day :). Here are the highlights:
    Lynden or Golden Glen milk/butter
    Brown Cow Yogurt
    Mom's Natural Best Cereals
The Frontier bulk display (spices/herbs, etc.)
    King Arthur products (flour, etc)
meats from a partnered local farm (Olsen Farms/Skagit River Ranch, etc.)
    Bulk Dry Beans
Bob's Red Mill line of cereals and some flours
    Jasmine/Basmati/Japanese rice in 10lb bags
    C&H Sugars
    Bulk Salt
    Real Maple Syrup
Local Tofu products (NW Tofu at 20th and Jackson)
Fresh and Local (when possible) Fruits and Veggies
    A small selection of cheeses

We also need a solid Ethnic foods section including some items for the Mexican-, Indian-, and Korean- American households. Say 2 shelves for each.

    Any other specific ideas anyone?

  4. From 2 blocks away—A few staples that would draw us to the market: Macrina fresh bread, local organic dairy and eggs, oj, salad greens and fruits and other veggies, NYTimes, selection of local chocolate, local bagels, quality ice cream, microbrew beer… yes, this is most of my grocery list. We are excited to have a market again.
